THE LORD'S DAY

May 19, 2002 - 10:30 A.M.

Worship Theme: Humbleness

PRELUDE

Mrs. Sue Senzig

ACTIVITIES & CONCERNS OF THE CHURCH

PREPARING IN STILLNESS

WELCOMING THE ASSEMBLY

PASTOR: The Lord be with you!
PEOPLE: And also with you!

CONFESSING OUR SINS

ALL: Most holy and merciful Father, we acknowledge and confess before you our sinful nature—prone to evil and slothful in good—and all our shortcomings and offenses against You. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from Your ways, in wasting Your gifts, in forgetting Your love.

O Lord, have mercy on us, who are ashamed and sorry for all wherein we have displeased You. Teach us to hate our errors, cleanse us from our secret faults, and forgive our sins for the sake of Your dear Son. And O most holy and loving Father, send Your purifying grace into our hearts, we beseech You, that we may henceforth live in Your light and walk in Your ways, ac-cording to the commandments of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSING OUR SINS PRIVATELY

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Psalm 51:16-17

PASTOR: Hear the promises of God to those who truly repent of their sins and trust in Christ: The Lord does not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; He does not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Now, lift up your hearts!

PEOPLE: We lift them up to the Lord!

SINGING TO THE LORD

Hymn 116

This is My Father’s World

CALL TO WORSHIP

from Psalm 149

PASTOR: Praise the LORD. Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints.

PEOPLE: Let Israel rejoice in their Maker; let the people of Zion be glad in their King.

PASTOR: Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with tambourine and harp.

ALL: For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation

RESPONDING IN SONG

Hymn 116

For the Beauty of the Earth

CONFESSING OUR FAITH

Heidelberg Catechism, 65-68

PASTOR: Since faith alone makes us share in Christ and all His benefits, where does this faith come from?

PEOPLE: From the Holy Spirit, who works it in our hearts by the preaching of the gospel, and strengthens it by the use of the sacraments.

PASTOR: What are the sacraments?

PEOPLE: The sacraments are holy, visible signs and seals. They were instituted by God so that by their use He might the more fully declare and seal to us the promise of the gospel. And this is the promise: that God graciously grants us forgiveness of sins and everlasting life because of the one sacrifice of Christ accomplished on the cross.

PASTOR: Are both the Word and the sacraments then intended to focus our faith on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as the only ground of our salvation?

PEOPLE: Yes, indeed. The Holy Spirit teaches us in the gospel and assures us by the sacraments that our entire salvation rests on Christ’s one sacrifice for us on the cross.

PASTOR: How many sacraments has Christ instituted in the new covenant?

PEOPLE: Two: holy baptism and the holy supper.

THANKING GOD FOR HIS PRESENCE

PASTOR: We give thanks to you, Lord, for you are good.
ALL: Your love endures forever. Amen.

DEDICATING OUR LIVES & GIFTS

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

PREPARING TO HEAR GOD'S WORD

Ensemble & Congregation

Surely Goodness and Mercy

So long have I wandered in darkness; in the shadows of grief and despair.
But the Lord in His mercy reminds me of the hope that He’s bringing to bear.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all of the days of my life.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all of the days,
All the days of my life.

His mercies are new ev’ry morning; His compassion and love never end.
His faithfulness reaches to the heavens and His blood sets me free from my sin.

Repeat Chorus

The Lord is my constant companion; by His Spirit, He makes Himself known.
He has placed His anointing upon me as a seal to declare me His own.

Repeat Chorus

Ensemble: And evermore shall my heart overflow with His loving-kindness
And I shall dwell in my Savior’s house forever, and forever.

Everyone: Repeat Chorus

RESPONDING IN SONG

Awesome God

Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from heaven above
With wisdom, pow’r and love, our God is an awesome God.

Shout to the Lord

My Jesus, my Savior, Lord, there is none like you:
All of my days I want to praise the wonders of your mighty love.
My Comfort, my Shelter, Tower of refuge and strength;
Let every breath, all that I am, never cease to worship You.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King;
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of your name.
I sing for joy at the work of your hands,
Forever I’ll love you, forever I’ll stand;
Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.

RECEIVING GOD'S BLESSING

Phil. 2:1-3; 4:20, 23

PASTOR: If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in the spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever, and the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

ALL: The Lord is King forever! Hallelujah! Amen.
