CONFESSING OUR SINS

ALL: Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. et us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through J esus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

PASTOR: Hear the promises of God to those who truly repent of their sins and trust in Christ: Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Now, lift up your hearts!

CALL TO WORSHIP

PASTOR:The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath that he will not revoke: “One of your own descendants I will place on your throne— if your sons keep my covenant and the statutes I teach them, then their sons will sit on your throne for ever and ever.”

PEOPLE: For the LORD has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling: “This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it— I will bless her with abundant provisions; her poor will I satisfy with food. I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints will ever sing for joy.

ALL: Let us go to his dwelling place; let us worship at his footstool— arise, O LORD, and come to your resting place, you and the ark of your might. May your priests be clothed with righteousness; may your saints sing for joy.

CONFESSING OUR FAITH

PASTOR: Why must our mediator and deliverer be a true and righteous man?

PEOPLE: He must be a true man because the justice of God requires that the same human nature which has sinned should pay for sin. He must be a righteous man because one who himself is a sinner cannot pay for others.

PASTOR: Why must He at the same time be true God?

PEOPLE: He must be true God so that by the power of His divine nature He might bear in His human nature the burden of God’s wrath, and might obtain for us and restore to us righteousness and life.

PASTOR: But who is that Mediator who at the same time is true God and a true and righteous man?

PEOPLE: Our Lord Jesus Christ, whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.

PASTOR: From where do you know this?

PEOPLE: From the holy gospel, which God Himself first revealed in Paradise. Later, He had it proclaimed by the patriarchs and prophets, and foreshadowed by the sacrifices and other ceremonies of the law. Finally, He had it fulfilled through His only Son.

THANKING GOD FOR HIS PRESENCE
